The Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecture
256th ACS National Meeting & Exposition

The Physical Chemistry Division is soliciting recommendations for its two nominations for the Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecture at the Fall 2018 ACS National Meeting in Boston. If you would like to suggest a candidate for one of the nominations, please send his/her current CV and a one-paragraph recommendation (self-nominations are allowed) to the secretary/treasurer by Feb., 9th, 2018. Representatives from the Division leadership will then make the final selections and work with the candidates to submit complete dossiers to the Kavli Award Review Committee.

Additional details about award eligibility and selection criteria are given below.
Nominating Criteria

  • The nominee must be a distinguished younger scientist who is highly regarded by his or her peers for significant contributions to an area of chemistry or related multidisciplinary area of chemistry.
  • The nominee may be from academia, industry, government, or business.
  • The nominee must be a person who is less than 40 years of age.
  • The nominee must not be more than 10 years removed from earning his or her Ph.D. at the time of the presentation (August 20, 2018).
  • The nominee must be solicited and nominated through one or more of the ACS Divisions or Committees.
  • The nominee does not need to be a member of the nominating group or a member of the ACS.
Nominating and Evaluating Procedures
  • Nominations are for The Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecture to be presented at the Fall ACS National Meeting in Boston, MA.
  • All nominations must be submitted on behalf of a Division or Committee after approval from the respective Chair.
  • Nominations are open to February 26, 2018.
  • A Review Committee composed of the 2018 MPPG (Multidisciplinary Programming Planning Group) Chair, the Thematic Program Organizers for 2018, and Chair appointees, will review all submitted nominations with the goal of announcing The Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecturer prior to the 2018 Spring ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA.
  • The Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecturer must attend the Boston, MA meeting to present a 40-minute lecture on the second day of the meeting (Monday, August 20, 2018), immediately preceding The Fred Kavli Innovations in Chemistry Lecture.
  • The Kavli Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecturer will receive a $5,000 honorarium.
Nomination Requirements
  • Nominations must be approved by the Division or Committee Chair.
  • Each Division and Committee has a maximum of two (2) nominations. If the nominating group wishes to submit two nominations, you must submit each nomination on a separate form.
  • Submit the nominations using the form and following the instructions therein.
  • Submit the Candidate Score Sheet, which will be used to objectively qualify each candidate's application.
  • Submit the nomination forms by email with attachments to KavliEmergingLecturer@acs.org.
  • Nominations not chosen for previous meetings may resubmitted them at the Division's discretion as long as the nominee meets the nominating criteria for the Boston, MA meeting.
  • Nominations must be submitted by the deadline: February 26, 2018.
Cover Page Must Include:
  1. Submitter contact information
  2. Nominee contact information, birthdate, and date on which the Ph.D. was awarded
  3. Three (3) seminal publication citations or accomplishments of the Nominee (200 word limit)
  4. Proposed title and scope for the lecture (200 word limit)
Two Supporting Documents:
  1. Nomination letter (1,000 word limit; submitted as a separate document using the stationary of the person making the nomination)
  2. CV/resume of the Nominee (1,000 word limit; submitted as a separate document provided by the nominee)
